The age of discussion,
Where a right is actually a wrong and a wrong calls for cancellation.
A time where mistakes know no existence and existence, like ignorance isn’t bliss(ful).
Judgement is in disguise and pretence feels all-encompassing.
Expression is a struggle, a battle, an uphill climb.
An age where birds are spreading the flu and giraffes are endangered,
Where whales are killed and used for medicine and medicine is not available to those who are dying.
This is not the world, “evolved”, rather the world “in danger”.
Moulded in the palms of overweight industrialists and corrupt politicians
To whom a Child’s life is worth not much more than a good bottle of whiskey.
To whom profit equals success, but sharing is allowed no space in their dictionary.
To whom the world is within reach, however the earth is not to be cared for.
We are in an age where democracies are dying and rape is being normalised,
Where wars are fought to uphold tradition, however compassion is scarce.
“Pandemic”, “illegal”, and “impeach” are words in our daily vocabulary,
Men like Trump, Putin and Modi have won the hearts of the masses,
“Nationalism”, “patriotism” and “brotherhood”, words that frighten me,
but slowly engulf and pollute the minds of fellow “natives”.
We have experienced an age of selfishness, ego and pride.
Where people are solely bothered about me, myself and I.
Where if the problem was posed and I had to choose to maneuver the train to kill 5 strangers or 1 family member I would choose the former, I'd have to save the latter.
5 vs 1 -
“But I was put on the spot, I couldn’t pick one!”
An age where black and white are still two contrasting colours, and not colours that are allowed to move freely and showcase their beauty when intertwined and merged.
A beauty that can foster change,
Power,
Justice,
And love.
This beauty comes in a shade of grey,
A shade of hope,
Just like the peaceful dove.
It may be an overheard cliché,
But after the hurricane there does seem to be a rainbow.
A little sliver of hope -
A decent encounter with a stranger,
Petting a dog on the sidewalk,
Or drinking a cup of your favourite tea.
Although we are in an age that seems inevitably doomed
These wholesome deeds show us the other side.
A side where we hold the power within ourselves to do good -
A power that just like the shade of grey, allows us to be just and spread love,
And eventually create change.
How well you have described the age we live in...a blend of poetry and prose. As you say we must recognise what is happening around us and yet see the hope and way to a happier tommorow.
