(Read this piece out loud for maximum effect, with maximum expression. You can go into a room on your own if you like. I remember how my mum would read me Dr. Seuss each night before bed. The Lorax and One Fish, Two Fish, were some of our favourites. I hear her voice as I read out the piece. It gives me goosebumps.)
Alone but not lonely is my piece
Inspired by Dr. Seuss (I love him).
Apologies for the repetition in advance,
But I really hope the rhythm puts you in a trance.
You see, the piece is not all that happy,
But the rhythm and rhyme casts a nasty -
Disguise, cause that’s just life, really.
Alone but not lonely with these thoughts,
Alone but not lonely within these walls,
Alone but not lonely on my bed,
Shout.“Alone but not lonely!”, pause I said -
To myself, cause I’m alone.
Alone but not lonely am I today,
Alone but not lonely will I be everyday.
Alone but not lonely till the day I die,
Alone but not lonely my, oh, my -
Wait, I tend to exaggerate.
Alone but not lonely in this complex mind,
Alone but not lonely in this foreign time,
Alone but not lonely in this daily grind,
Alone but not lonely in this body of mine -
That’s safe, and that is nice.
my mind
Alone but not lonely am I in my room,
Alone but not lonely am I using a broom,
Alone but not lonely am I doing my tasks,
Alone but not lonely am I drinking a glass -
Of water, cause I like it.
my room
Alone but not lonely am I dancing on my own,
Alone but not lonely am I eating alone.
Alone but not lonely am I calling my mum,
Alone but not lonely am I feeling rather glum -
But no, I am happy.
my phone
Alone but not lonely are most of us today -
In these times that seem to be here to stay.
Let’s hope it's just a phase, like bell bottoms,
denim joggers and that horrid hairspray.
Alone but not lonely do I feel,
Not a bad thing, mad thing, sad thing, or small.
It’s better to be alone but not lonely,
Than to be lonely at all.
